About the Book
Michael's first album,
Self Assession,
was released in 1993 as a cassette tape. In 1995, it was released as a
CD. His second album, Root 2 Fruit was released as a CD in
1998 and in 2000, Michael created a chapbook, Root 2 Fruit Lyrics by
Michael St. George. In 2001, Michael completed a compilation of
his work to publish, this title—his first dub poetry book, Night
Spin.
Primarily a performer,
Michael works many late nights—a time for introspection. He uses the
night-time silence to capture his reflections. He thrives on his drive along
social, political and spiritual roads. Through Night Spin, readers
become Michael's passengers on his train of contemplation, beaming thoughts
that glow with a dub poet's artistry, enlightening, lightening and enriching
our lives.

michael st. george is one of the
hardest working, relentlessly touring, constantly performing and recording
poets out/there right now. he has supa-bad skills in the use of language.
the way he vocalises and marries crucial concerns with dynamic music in his
live performances is captivating. his mastery of the dub poetic form and
sensibility is out/standing. his poetry brims with the experience of a
seasoned chronicler, a masterer of his form, in his form. "night spin"
brings together poems that will jump at you, take you through moods and
modalities, politics and poetics. "night spin" is bright like morning.

Michael's work resonates as a
clear-clear, strident movement that is bold, daring, honest, funny,
politically insightful and inspiring. It is poetic. It is sweet too, when
that is what is needed. It is right in time.

While eschewing metaphor and
indirection in favour of unvarnished rhetoric and direct analysis, these
poems don't lose the heart beat or pulse of poetry. Indeed, they chant, bop,
hop, hip, and sing! Listen closely to the mouth music: Dub has a new voice
singing the body electric!
